04:27 am - Op de Amsterdamse grachten...
I had the best day ever today. I thought I was working 9 till 8 but then at 4pm my boss came and said that at 5 he was taking me on a boat ride around Amsterdam. It turned out it was me, him, and Robert my colleague. We rode all around Amsterdam in the evening sun, drinking beer and even stopping for a drink somewhere with a terrace on the water. Gorgeous. Its been a while since I have seen Amsterdam in a positive light and this was just what I needed.

Then I raced to Sien and Dennis' house for the birthday party. These are people who were my very first friends here 8 years ago, people who met and told my parents that they would always take care of me. Man, it was so nice to see all my old friends and "Family" from the old west and get drunk and stoned like the old days.

After the party I had a couple of beers with Kostas in the Spijker before returning home. On the way I decided to stop off in the Lellebel voor nog eentje om het af te leren and ended up first chatting with the landlord from the turnpike on the corner, who I have always thought was a bit sexy, and then none other than Hans Klok! He was there with his big hair and young boyfriend, but he was friendly enough and all said and done it was a cozy evening!

After a night like this, Geef mij maar Amsterdam!

The funeral was unforgettable, emotional, but beautiful. It was a beautiful little boy and now he is resting on a beautiful spot, in a beautiful place. My feelings go out to his parents, my friends, that they may have the strength and power to cope with the loss of their beautiful son...

Rest In Peace Ezra Elijah

11:51 pm - Food Glorious Food.
I am starving and we have quite literally no food in our apartment.

Nothing, nada, nopus! Well, we have condiments, ketchup, garlic sauce and margarine but nothing that can actually be turned into a meal. There is a snack bar about 100 meters from the house but I am so lazy I ate euro shopper peanut butter straight out of the jar instead.

I even went to the supermarket today and after visiting the wine aisle I completely forgot to buy food. So when I eventually die of scurvy or malnutrition at lest I'll be pissed.

05:29 pm - Having a billboard time!
It was all very well wearing football shorts, sneakers and a ROB vest while sitting on a terrace in the sun. However, several hours later sitting at the bar in the Eagle it dawned on me that I was infact a fetish. Everyone said I looked sexy and two people even asked if I had been working out (WTF?) but I couldn't help wondering that dressed in sportswear I was somehow giving off the wrong message. That perhaps I engaged in competitive sports or something.

I ended up leaving with an Eagle vest and a Dirty Dicks T-shirt which added to my collection of gay establishment logos means I could wear a different one each day for a week and never advertise the same place twice. For fucks sake I may aswell walk up and down the Reguliersdwarstraat wearing a Spartacus sandwich board.

But far be it from me to look a gift-horse in the mouth, after all, free stuff is free stuff. Plus I dare say, I do look pretty damn hot.

"Dunbar's number is the supposed cognitive limit to the number of individuals with whom any one person can maintain stable social relationships: the kind of relationships that go with knowing who each person is and how each person relates socially to every other person."

08:22 am - life is unreal...life is not honest
I just had a horrible phonecall from a friend yesterday. One of my best friends had a babyboy and he died after only 1,5 day. It appears he had too little oxygen when his mother was in labour and it damaged his brain, causing his heart to fail and the baby died in their arms in the middle of the night.
I am stunned, I am numb, words do not suffice for a thing like this to happen.

Tomorrowmorning at 8.30 we will deliver the boy back to mother earth. I don't understand, I cannot comprehend, I pray for my friends, the father and the mother, that they will keep up. This is something we will never be able to understand.

He told me, he was such a beautiful, perfect little boy...may God be with them.

10:41 am - Is Cap's shield in Iron Man?
Interesting article, over here, which surmises that Tony Stark seems to be building Captain America's shield.

From the pic provided, it seems like a little bit of a reach, but I can certainly see the shape of it, and why someone would think that.

If so, then good catch for those who saw it, since during the movie, I was so overcome with the awesomeness of it all, that it totally passed by me.

11:07 pm - And the winner is...
Norway has been named as the best place in the world to live, according to an annual report from the United Nations. The factors taken into consideration were standard of living, infant birth mortality rate and life expectancy amongst many other things. I can only assume from the results that climate, the price of alcohol and suicide rate weren't issues!

Top 15 countries:

1 Norway
2 Sweden
3 Canada
4 Belgium
5 Australia
6 United States
7 Iceland
8 Netherlands
9 Japan
10 Finland
11 Switzerland
12 France
13 UK
14 Denmark
15 Austria

I have to admit I'm not surprised by the results, except maybe Belgium ranking 4th place. As pleasant as our neighboring country is I wouldn't have expected them to make the top 10. Plus based on personal opinion I would obviously swap number 1 for number 7...

Just out of interest Sierra Leone came last! I guess Oprah is yet to open a school for girls there.

The Abba has played host to some wonderful people recently and I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed their company.

On Friday night I met a couple of sweet Lithuanian guys from their capitol "Vilnius". Which is an unfortunate anagram of "Vuilnis". I pointed this out to them and they weren't best pleased! However, so impressed were they by my ability to say I love you in their almost impossible language, that we met for drinks last night in the Spijker. Lithuanians are actually really nice people indeed, who knew?

Then today I had the pleasure of meeting a truly wonderful Canadian lady visiting from Italy, where she lives. We spent a lovely afternoon sitting in the sun chatting about books, movies, travel and even had a light hearted discussion about religion. Safe in the knowledge that we shared the same opinion. We left each other with a list of book and film recommendations and I just know I will love all her ideas because one of her favourite books is "Running with Scissors". For her I recommended "Rant" (of course) and "The Five people you meet in Heaven" which she will totally love!

One of the nicest things about working in Hotels is meeting up with like minded people from all over the world. Who needs internet at work when you can be surrounded by great and wonderful people!

02:14 pm - [Help, I'm turning into a housewife!]
[x]A while ago I asked about applesauce stains. I have since then found a remedy (as we apparently don't have borax, and whereas I thought washing soda was available, I haven't found it so far).
Marseille soap works really well when applied to it immediately (just rub the stain out with a stick), and it works even on older stains that have been in the dryer repeatedly (I had 50% success rate, will apply it again after next wash cycle, just apply the soap and then throw it in the washing machine like that).

[x]Love love love the Dyson. Thanks for the tip, [info]patti_sue ;)

[x]Next: a mobile a/c unit. I tried looking for swamp coolers but as I've said before, before global warming we really did not need a/c over here. There was 3 weeks of good weather in summer and for the rest it was rainy. I remember playing on a frozen sea when I was little, and temperatures would easily go under 0! Now, it's a record if it reaches 0. So it's pretty normal we're catching up regarding cooling techniques. Ah well, we found an energy class A one for an affordable price (ouch, second big dent!), at least that will get us through until we find a house.

What a bunch of thieving rip off bastards. Dont worry they haven't sucked me in yet but I feel desperately sorry for all the cell phone wielding kids who were.

Not that you actually need to download any of the ring tones because the commercials are broadcast so frequently its quite easy to tire of them without actually owning them. However the new phone software they are trying to flog has gotten beyond a joke. I mean they have always been pointless, irritating and aimed at people with more pocket money than sense. Because lets be honest you would have to have a few screws loose upstairs to order the Crazy Frog, the Fluffy bunny, or the dance remix of the National anthem.

Their latest however really take the biscuit.

Today I saw that you can " Pretend" to sponsor a dying child in africa. they send you a photo of some random black kid. To get it you have to sms "AIDS ON". Surely this is wrong on so many levels.. ????

But the worst is yet to come. You can now download a game that allows you to look through your telephone camera lens and see people naked. Its called the Naaktkijker. Like X-Ray glasses or something (and we all want some of them) Yet the commercial actually claims that this function doesn't really work but you can have fun pretending to all your friends that it does. Excuse me, WHAT? Surely we could do that anyway without having the privilege of paying 3 euros and being locked in a painful ringtone contract. For this delightful service you are required rather appropriately to sms "NIETS AAN" naar 6464 to those kut Jamba scamps.

But who is protecting the children?

Why is it that exes never really seem to disappear from your life? Why do they have to sit across the street from your house, so you have to see them? Get a life, a hobby, or whatever...I might get me a gun one of these days...j/k :)

I desperately needed some cheering up today, and what better way to do that than get a new tattoo... I must have been pretty miserable because it took THREE new tattoos to put a smile back on my face! They look gorgeous and I am totally happy now. I also got my hair cut today and I'm looking pretty dapper if I may say so myself? Now all I need is a whole new wardrobe and I'm good to go...
